1
American Football
Votes: 28
You might be confused if you live anywhere else in the world since in American football, you use your hands to handle the ball. If you used your feet, well… that’d be too obvious!

2
Basketball
Votes: 19
This sport’s name is a little more intuitive thn the last. It’s called basketball because in the original game, the goals were peach baskets! Oh, you also weren’t allowed to dribble when it was first invented. 🤯

3
Baseball
Votes: 12.5
Originally invented in the 18th century, baseball, aka America’s pastime, is a staple of American sports. The first game with rules most similar to modern rules was played in 1846 in New York City.

4
Gymnastics
Votes: 11
My personal favorite sport to watch in the olymipcs, gymnastics is a fun mix of art, acrobatics, and some aspects of dance. Gymnastics was “invented” as a way to train soldiers in Ancient Greece!

5
Figure Skating
Votes: 10
Figure skating routines are made up of moves which all have a point value generally from 0.25 to 10.00. Ilia Malinin is the only person to have completed the quad axel, the hardest move at a 12.5 point value.

6
Swimming
Votes: 6.5
Swimming is a great form of exercise. Swimmers burn off a good bit more calories than bikers or runners, and swimming is a complete full-body workout. It has been an olympic sport since 1896.

7
Golf
Votes: 5
Tied with soccer at #7, golf is a very relaxing sport to watch. The Masters Tournament is the biggest tournament in the sport. It has been held at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia since its beginning in 1934.

8
Soccer
Votes: 5
Soccer, known as football in most countries outside the USA, is a game played with a ball and two goals. The USA is not alone in calling the sport soccer, with countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Canada following suit.

9
Hockey
Votes: 3
Hockey is basically soccer on ice. Instead of a ball though, you use a puck and hit it with a stick. One big difference it is known for though is that players are allowed to fight on the ice, with a penelty after it ends.

10
Volleyball
Votes: 3
Our 10th sport is actually tied at #9 with Hockey. Volleyball is a game involving teams hitting a ball back and forth over a net. It was originally called mintonette when it was invented in 1895 by William George Morgan.
*Votes were collected from a sample of 42 individuals, including our newsletter subscribers, players on the Christ Community Church (Birmingham, AL) softball team, Cornerstone co-op (Birmingham, AL), and employees at Daxko. Each participant had three votes, with no repeats allowed.
